                   History of The Forgehouse .

The Forge House on Templeogue Road
was built for the first Baronet Robert Shaw in 1800.

Initially a turnpike it served his newly built road through
the estate, which is now the nearby bushy park.

It was also a DMP Barracks and then a tenement.
The site of the adjacent forge is now a physiotherapy clinic.
Restoration of the property was started in the late seventies .

Working outside on dark winter evenings
The new arrivals learnt a little of the buildings history.
One swaying man quietly said
"More people went in there ahhm than ever came ouoot."
This was delivered with such solemn certainty
it just had to be true.

Excavations turned up rusty stirrups, horse shoes
and clumps of clinker but no bones.

Internal renovation started with removal of steel sheets
from shutters and doors. Much work lay ahead.

There is an excellent library nearby and some good schools.

The black tap sign indicated the plumbing and heating business carried out from here for many years.
The tap design outline was taken from a Disney cartoon.

Little boots.
Memory of a little helper rescued from quicksand during renovations.
The three children who grew up here are now happily pursuing careers in Mainland Europe.

Terenure College opposite the park was once a Shaw Residence.
